The Chuckegg Creek wildfire has grown to more than twice the size of Edmonton.
It is one of the biggest wildfires in Alberta’s history and is almost half the size of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire.
The wildfire continued moving southeast on Wednesday and grew about 80,000 hectares. Mandatory evacuations have happened in various communities from several wildfires in Alberta.
The weather Friday is expected to be around 23 C, with moderate winds out of the east.
The fire is extremely powerful. We must respect it.
It won’t be put out fully for months. As a community, we will be having smoke around us, in the air we breathe, for some time to come.
We're saddened to hear some of our neighbours in the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement lost their homes. They will have a long road to recovery. As a community, our thoughts and support are with them.
Please keep our town, county and First Nation neighbours in your thoughts and prayers – along with all the fire crews, officials and support staff who are working around the clock.
